Welcome to My Life In Focus

I'm Alice, a 40-year-old web specialist and published amateur photographer living in Louisville, KY. My dad sparked my interest in photography when I was young. When I was growing up, we had a darkroom in the house and I would hang out with my dad as he developed his photos. I remember being fascinated watching the whole process, but my favorite part was watching a blank piece of paper transform into a beautiful photo, as if by magic.

I started this website as a way to inspire myself to take time to do more photography. Rushing through each day, I started to realize there are so many wonderful sights that I often didn't take the time to enjoy. I figured by posting my photos, it would help remind me to slow down and enjoy the view and would also enable me to improve my skills and hopefully become a better photographer.

Equipment

My first camera was a Canon T70 with a 70-210mm lens that my parents gave me for my high school graduation. I've had that camera for almost 20 years now, and it still works perfectly.

I always swore I'd never switch to digital, but I'm so glad I did! By nature, I'm very much into "instant gratification" projects, so going digital has made me very happy. I love being able to take photos and have the ability to view them on the spot, rather than spending hard-earned money getting rolls of film developed, only to find out all the photos suck!

Images on this website are all taken with the following equipment:

Cameras and bodies:
Canon EOS 20D (main camera)
Olympus FE-230 (pocket size)
Fuji FinePix S9000
Fuji FinePix S602Z

Lenses:
Canon EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS

Accessories:
Manfrotto 190XDB tripod
Manfrotto 484RC2 ballhead
580EXII speedlight
Circular Polarizer filter
Hoodman LCD Screen loupe
Hoodman Right Angle Viewfinder
Neutral Density filter
Infrared filter
Tamrac and Lowepro bags
Sandisk Ultra II CF cards

Software for post-processing:
I use PhotoShop Elements 6 when needed (no, I still haven't upgraded to CS2) but I prefer keeping the post-processing to a minimum, so most of what I'll be posting on this site will be untouched photos unless otherwise noted.

2008

In the Fall of 2008 I had a couple photos published in "Capture Kentuckiana" - a book produced by the Courier-Journal (Louisville's newspaper). Area photographers submitted their photos and favorites were chosen by popular vote and by Courier-Journal editors. I ended up with two photos in the book and three on the DVD (included in the book). More information is available here.

2009

A photo I took for an article by a writer for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State ended up being published on their cover! Thanks Alicia!
